Back Yard

Reviewed August 2004: Rating

After a busy day at the office all I want to do is relax, have a good meal and get in a few rounds of darts with friends. But finding the right place is the challenge. On a hot Friday night after a short train ride to Ebisu we found a perfect little place.

The Back Yard is located about 5mins walk from Ebisufs Hibiya and Yamanote stations. And it is literally the back yard. Nestled at the back of a large new mansion, the entrance looks like secret passage way another world. The classic pub decor around the entrance looks ages older than the surrounding buildings and has the feeling of a long established and well loved neighborhood pub. And we were not disappointed after passing through the doors.

Back Yard is small but comfortable with an atmosphere like a true local pub. Inside we found a wonderful bar lining the area near the entrance. Inside another dining bar area and several tables comfortably located near a projector screen for watching sports events. In the far corner one of the most comfortable hideaways we have seen, prefect for a group of friends and located close to the dartboard area.

Despite being a small place Back Yard have really done a great job locating their darts machines. With one Spectrum and one Darts Live machine provided with plenty of room behind the throw line, a table for keeping darts and drinks and out of the way so you wonft have people passing by during play.

The staff are great, friendly and welcoming. For our first time visiting we felt very welcome and comfortable. The team was very attentive to the customers and took great care of everyone there. On a busy night you may need to wait a little to play, but the staff at Back Yard were great in coordinating the machines to make sure that everyone had a good block of time to play.

One great note. Back Yard has turned down the volume of their darts machines. This was a very welcome change from the usual noisy dart bars. Our play was still fun and easy to hear the darts machines sounds, but when not playing the low volume protected the nice atmosphere of the club. We wish more places would consider doing so too.

Good food can be hard to find in dart bars but Back Yard has taken time to really put together a fun and tasty menu. The food was good with a home cooked feeling perfect for a night out of darts or a casual dinner before playing a few rounds. The prices are reasonable and drink selection was quite nice.

Back Yard has a small selection of darts and darts accessories available. On the night we visited there were also some quite talented regulars playing a few rounds. Monthly a local house tournament is held for 3,000 yen entrance fee including two drinks. The roster included some of the areas best players.

With the upcoming Olympic season Back Yard is likely to be one of our favorites. A great place to have dinner and a drink after work, keep up on the Olympic events and most importantly, get in a few rounds of great darts. We recommend Back Yard to darters who want a traditional pub feel and a friendly place to spend an evening.

Thanks to the team at Back Yard for their help with our sudden visit on a busy Friday night. It gave us a chance to the see the bar filled with people who love it and gave us a genuine picture to give to our readers. Cheers to Back Yard and their team and good darting!!!
