Standard Darts Rules (note: Many darts organizations have specific rules that apply to tournament and game play. Those rules may differ slightly from the rules below. The rules below are common rules in use in casual and recreational play.)

  1. The game space must have a toe line placed at the appropriate distance from the face of the dartboard (see Setup for more information on this distance).
  2. Darters may lean across the toe line as long as neither foot crosses over the toe line. The darter must not not cross touch his or her foot across the toe line before the dart reaches the dartboard.
  3. When darts do not stick in the board: In Steel Tip Darts, darts that do not stick or bounce out of the board do not count and may not be rethrown. In lectronic darts, the "Board is Always Right". This means that the dart counts as long as the machine records the thrown dart. If the electronic game does not record the dart, the "Board is Always Right" and the dart may not be manually counted.
  4. In electronic darts, darts must not be thrown until the "Throw Darts" (or board is ready for your turn) message lights up. Darts thrown early will not count and cannot be manually added.
  5. Each darter gets three throws per turn.
  6. Selecting who goes first. In Japan the common method is Junken. Each player or person will play rock, scissors, paper (Junken) to determine who goes first. After selecting the winner, each player or a representative of each team will throw at the center of the board in the order won by Junken. The team or player with the closest dart to center will go first followed the the next closest and so on.

Etiquette

  1. Do not stand directly behind the person who is throwing darts.
  2. Do not practice throwing while the other player is throwing.
  3. Do not distract or make noise while the other person is throwing.
  4. Do not cross the toe line during another player's turn.
  5. Do not recover your bounce out darts during a neighboring players turn. Wait until the turn is ended to recover your dart.
